Why Singers Shouldn’t Be Allowed to Play the Drums

In todays entry, I explain how my blogs, and vlogs, themselves started to change — and why letting a singer anywhere near a drum kit is usually a terrible idea.

Originally, I planned to split the series into three neat sections: artwork, gear, and A/B comparisons between demo tracks and final versions. That idea fell apart fairly quickly. I know nothing about equipment, nobody wants to hear terrible guitar demos, and pretending otherwise would’ve been pointless.

Instead, the series turned into a retrospective look at how I accidentally ended up making an album in the first place.

After nearly three decades of singing in bands, and of annoying drummers by sitting behind their kits, I decided to try learning properly during COVID. I borrowed an electronic kit, bought a cheap double kick pedal, and started watching advanced drum video tutorials, as you do. When I couldn’t find simple backing tracks to practice with, I recorded a few riffs myself and looped them.

That escalated into trying to write a full song — and eventually into the realisation that my drumming was, objectively, terrible. A grid check on ezdrummer confirmed it.

Conclusion: drums were officially off the list.

Spending £210 to Fix a Problem Nobody Would’ve Noticed

In today’s Corpse Diary entry, I explain how I managed to spend a lot of time and a lot of money fixing flaws in a logo that, realistically, nobody else would’ve ever spotted. After my last experience working with an unfamiliar artist, I decided to go back to someone I’d worked with plenty of times before. He was reliable, easy to communicate with, and—crucially—not a thief. This time, I didn’t send a reference logo at all. I couldn’t be bothered going through that again and risking another copy job.
