The Internet Is Bad for You (And It Writes Songs for You)

In this Corpse Diary entry, I explain how watching absolute nonsense on the internet directly resulted in another song being written.

About a week after finishing the demo for There’s a Body in the Tank, I fell down a YouTube rabbit hole and ended up watching videos about McKamey Manor — a so-called haunted house attraction that’s worth Googling if you enjoy reading unhinged reviews. Naturally, I decided it would make a great subject for a song.

This was the first time I actually sat down with the intention of writing something from scratch. I had no real process, so I did what any beginner would do: Googled “simple song structure,” picked the first result, and ran with it. I used EZdrummer loops to build the structure, then played guitar over the top.

It took about two days to write. The song was originally called McKamey Manor, but given their reputation for lawsuits, I changed it. As the lyrics evolved, it became less about the attraction and more about torture in general, so it became You Can Scream, It Won’t Matter.

Lesson learned: stop watching the internet — it’s expensive.
